Marketing Materials
During my studies at The Ohio State University, I had the opportunity to join a cohort of students at Urban Arts Space as a graphic design intern. In this role, I collaborated with gallery staff and fellow interns to create visual materials that supported exhibitions, events, and publications while gaining hands-on experience in a professional arts environment.
Urban Arts Space is a contemporary gallery in downtown Columbus, Ohio, operated by The Ohio State University. It serves as a dynamic platform for exhibitions, workshops, and public programs, showcasing work from students, faculty, and professional artists. The gallery emphasizes experimental and interdisciplinary projects that challenge conventional boundaries of art and engage the community directly. At its heart, Urban Arts Space seeks to foster meaningful dialogue about contemporary art, craft, identity, and social issues, while providing space for connection, learning, and creative expression.
In addition to planning and hosting community events, I contributed to the visual identity of Urban Arts Space through promotional materials, social media marketing, and publication design. My role included creating digital and print graphics for exhibitions, workshops, and public programs, as well as co-designing a published journal that documented gallery projects and research.
Working on promotional campaigns taught me how to balance gallery branding guidelines with fresh, event-specific visuals. For example, I designed posters and social media assets that captured the energy of community workshops like Totes on Town while still aligning with Urban Arts Space’s contemporary aesthetic. These materials reached thousands of people through both in-gallery displays and online platforms.
By combining event design, digital marketing, and publication work, I developed a flexible graphic design skillset while learning how visual communication can bridge the gap between art spaces and the communities they serve.
Design At Urban Arts Space
Video played an integral role in Urban Arts Space’s marketing strategy, allowing us to connect with audiences through engaging, behind-the-scenes content. Reel and story creation offered a glimpse into exhibition setups and previews, helping to build excitement and increase gallery attendance. In addition to promotional content, I developed a video series titled “Gallery Basics with Morgan,” which served both as an engaging social media feature and a training resource for future intern cohorts. This project strengthened my skills in visual storytelling, content strategy, and production, while reinforcing the importance of accessible and informative communication within the arts community.

Building the Vision: Illustrating History
For the exhibition Illustrating History: Black Columbus at Urban Arts Space, my role was to translate the show’s themes into engaging, adaptable visuals. I started by creating a color palette from the artwork that the artist provided, and initally relied heavily on the concept of hand illustration to guide my designs.
I collaborated closely with the exhibition artist Aleesha Nash, moving through several iterations and refining details. Together we decided to focus the design on the exhibition’s central character—a young black girl discovering the history of Columbus—until we arrived at a final design that aligned with both the narrative and the visual tone of the exhibition.
I begin every project with the website header, since it’s the smallest marketing component and requires the most efficiency in both layout and hierarchy. Starting here allows me to test creative directions through quick iterations and establish a clear visual framework before expanding to larger formats.
